Senate Passes Bill Recognizing 100th Anniversary of Indy 500

Americans began racing cars just as soon as they started to appear on our streets, as evidenced by the fact that the Indianapolis 500 has been going strong for 100 years. The U.S. Senate wanted to tip its collective hat to commemorate that momentous occasion, so our senators decided to pass a resolution officially recognizing the race for its longevity. And since it doesn’t cost anything to recognize a date, the resolution was passed unanimously.

In other interesting Indianapolis 500 news, the event’s 100-year history also coincides with the 100-year anniversary of Chevrolet. The company and the race are so intertwined that Arthur Chevrolet, who’s brother Louis founded the Bowtie Brand, ran the very first Indianapolis 500. Louis actually ran the race himself in 1915 and 1919, while another brother Gaston took first place in 1920. The 2011 Camaro Convertible will fittingly serve as the pace car for this year’s event.

Patina’d 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Headed to Power Tour

Bill Rombauts and his buddy Dave Sherer have taken the patina’d rat rod look to new heights, applying the rust-first philosophy to a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS. Before going all Father Time on the paint job, the two spent close to $100,000 giving the car as much go as it has show. Underneath all that affected rust and thinning paint lives a worked-over Kenne Bell supercharged 485-cubic-inch V8 based on a GM Performance Parts block. Before the addition of the blown 485, the Chevrolet was pumping out in the neighborhood of 650 rear-wheel-horsepower and tripping the lights in around 11 seconds through the quarter mile. Now, Sherer and Rombauts are looking for the 10-second range, and won’t say what kind of power the car makes. Say what you will about the decision to make a brand-new Camaro look like it’s 30 years old, but you definitely can’t argue with this thing’s gusto. With prodigious power, a $100K mod list and a paint scheme some might call ugly, it’s also guaranteed to make a stir on Power Tour 2011. To make that goal a reality, Rombauts and Sherer are looking for sponsors to get their car to and from the Tour.

LA Sheriff’s Department Tests New Police Cruisers

Curious about the latest crop of cop cars? The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department – which undoubtedly has good reason to be interested in such machines – has released a bit of data to help clue you in on the newest cruisers. California’s Boys in Blue put 15 vehicles through rigorous testing, and they ended up with a rather large stack of results. How large are we talking?

174 pages.

We thought cops hated paperwork, but it appears the movie industry has again lied to us. Those 174 pages are filled with stats on all 15 test vehicles, officer insight into vehicle performance and results from the various types of tests applied. We’ll be honest… we’ve only skimmed. We’re not quite ready to take a deep dive into this particular PDF, however, it’s available for you to peruse at the LA County Sheriff’s Department website, should you have some time to kill.

Celebrities Go Green With Chevrolet Volts

NASCAR champ Jeff Gordon and horror writer Stephen King are among a slew of celebrities who are getting a charge out of being the first to own the Chevrolet Volt hybrid.

King, who winters in Florida, bought the Volt in April as a birthday gift for his wife, author Tabitha King. But the best-selling author enjoys driving it so much, he wishes he purchased it for himself, King told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. “I just love it because every time you do it, it is like saying to the oil cartel, ‘Here, stick this in your eye,’” King told the Herald-Tribune. “It is like a license to steal.”

Both King and Gordon chose a black version of the Volt, while TV show host and car nut Jay Leno selected Cyber Gray Metallic. Leno, who pre-ordered the vehicle, took delivery right before Christmas. His VIN is 12, according to the GM Volt Web site.

2013 Chevy Malibu Debuts at New York Auto Show

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is now what they call a “world car” in the industry. Instead of building several different versions for the various markets around the world, this Malibu will be more or less the same whether it’s at a dealer in Beijing or French Lick, which is not in France by the way.

The constraints of the world market have imposed some notable changes to this midsize sedan. Unlike any number of its predecessors, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is not universally bigger. Its wheelbase has been cut down by 4.5 inches while its overall length has been reduced by half an inch. The car’s width is up by nearly 3 inches, though, so the sedan’s proportions are still largely intact. The shorter wheelbase reduces legroom slightly but the added width substantially improves hip- and shoulder room.

2012 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback makes its debut

Last Fall, we spent some quality time debunking the myth that American consumers don’t buy hatchbacks. The Europeans, however, need no such convincing, as five-doors and wagons rule the roost in many a segment overseas. Chevrolet understands this, which is why it has rolled out the Cruze hatchback in Geneva. With General Motors estimating that 65 percent of all compact sales in Europe are of the hatchback variety, this model is arguably more important than the sedan in much of the world.

Slated to go on sale in the middle of this year, the Cruze’s 60/40 split rear seat and around 14 cubic feet of cargo space should add some utility to Chevy’s very mature compact offering. Check it out in the gallery below and then hit the jump for GM’s official presser.

When/Where is it?2/26/2011 – 3/6/2011 at the International Exposition Center in Cleveland.  (IX Center) – FREE PARKING!

What should we expect from Chevrolet?
2012 Chevrolet Sonic will be the headliner along with the Chevrolet Volt and the All-New Camaro Convertible.

Here is an article about the launch of the Chevy Sonic at the Detroit Auto Show.
The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is the small car GM has been saying it will build for decades. This time, however, the Sonic has been given a stylish look along with a generous helping of the company’s latest technology. Penalty box? No, just a smaller version of the company’s best sedans. At least that’s how Chevrolet is pitching it.

Positioned to compete with Ford’s Fiesta,Mazda’s 2, Honda’s Fit and Toyota’s Yaris, Chevrolet’s new entry will be available as a sedan or a five-door hatchback. There will be a choice of two engines and three transmissions, which it shares with the larger, heavier Chevy Cruze.
