Three engines are available in the 2012 Chevy Colorado, starting with the lowest powered 2.9-liter inline-4 DOHC gas engine. This basic engine is available as standard in work truck and 1LT trims, offering 185 horsepower and 190 ft-lbs of torque. With this lower-powered engine, available towing weight is 4,000 lbs with a 1,440 lb cargo carrying ability. The next engine up is a 3.7-liter inline-4 DOHC, which produces 242 hp and 242 ft-lbs of torque. Available as an option in all trims, it is standard for crew cabs and can tow up to 6,000 lbs with a 1,397 lb cargo carrying ability. Premium trim trucks come standard with a 5.3-liter V8 engine that offers 300 hp and 320 ft-lbs of torque. Its towing and load carrying ability matches the 3.7-liter engine, but it has better acceleration.

Fuel economy in the 2012 Chevy Colorado is optimum with the lower powered 2.9-liter engine. It is capable of 18 miles per gallon in the city and up to a decent 25 mpg on the highway. The more powerful 3.7-liter manages 17 mpg in the city and up to 23 mpg on the open highway, so it is comparable to the weaker engine. Customers who want the higher powered V8 engine version of the 2012 Chevy Colorado will find they enjoy the extra power with only a slight dip in fuel performance as it can still manage 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the open road.

The 2012 Chevy Colorado, when fitted with either the 2.9-liter or 3.7 liter engines, is described as smooth in acceleration and handling.
